Martin worked with designer Rudy Krolopp, he used Motorola’s existing patents to make their new device. So ultimately they made DynaTAC (Dynamic Adaptive Total Area Coverage) phone which was 23cm tall, and weighed 1.1kg. Surprisingly it required 10 hours for full charge and it could be used for only 35 minutes. Martin in a press conference revealed that he made a call to his rival, Joel Engel who is the research chief at Bell Labs and the location of the call was the streets of New York on April 3, 1973. After that, Martin also made various calls, and he also made a call to New York radio reporter while crossing the road. The first cell phone call was made in 1973, after 10 years of development before the cell phone was made available to the public. It almost weighed five times more than what present popular flagship phones are weighing. The DynaTAC 8000x was released to the public in 1983 and came with a whopping price of $3,955. However, today smartphones are available as low as $4.
